People – Port City 09

Hei. I’m Ingrid. People often ask me if I ever feel trapped by these mountains. I tell them that when you are born in the fjord, the mountains don’t trap you; they embrace you.

My family has lived in one of those red wooden cabins for four generations. We don’t measure time in hours here, but in the shifting light against the peaks. In the winter, the sun barely kisses the horizon, and the world turns a deep, silent blue. That’s when we light the fires and find comfort in what we call koselig—a warmth that goes deeper than just temperature.

I steer the ferry that connects our village to the mainland. Every morning, cutting through the glass-like water, I watch the mist roll off the glaciers. It’s a harsh life—the wind can be unforgiving and the isolation is real—but when I breathe in this crisp, icy air, I feel a clarity you just can’t find in the city. The fjord is not just where I live; it’s who I am.
